The good news is that styling usually becomes much easier once you work with the actual shape of your table instead of against it. Rectangle, square, round, and oval coffee tables each benefit from slightly different arrangements that help the space feel intentional and visually balanced.

In this guide, I’m sharing a few simple styling formulas that work beautifully for different coffee table shapes using a mix of height, layering, texture, and negative space. Rectangle Coffee Table Styling

Rectangle coffee tables typically have the most surface area, which means they benefit from arrangements that visually stretch across the table instead of sitting in one small cluster. A combination of a taller item, layered books or trays, and a smaller accent piece helps create balance from end to end.

One of the easiest ways to style a rectangular table is by thinking in zones. Rather than centering everything in the middle, try allowing your styling pieces to spread naturally across the length of the table. A vase with greenery can add height, stacked books help ground the arrangement, and a candle or decorative bowl introduces texture and warmth.

Leaving a little breathing room between objects also helps the table feel collected instead of crowded. The goal is balance — not filling every inch of surface space.

Square Coffee Table Styling

Square coffee tables usually look best when styled around a central focal point. Because the shape naturally feels symmetrical, anchoring the arrangement in the middle helps create a calm and cohesive look.

A larger centerpiece, like a vase or sculptural object, works beautifully as the main anchor. From there, you can layer smaller elements around it using books, candles, bowls, or decorative objects to soften the arrangement and add dimension.

Square tables also tend to have generous surface area, so styling in grouped layers often feels more intentional than scattering small items throughout the table. Keeping the arrangement concentrated toward the center helps the space feel balanced while still leaving room for everyday functionality.

Round Coffee Table Styling

Round coffee tables naturally encourage softer, more organic arrangements. Since there are no hard corners, styling tends to work best when objects are grouped in a loose triangle formation rather than lined up in straight rows.

Using items with varied heights creates visual movement and helps the arrangement feel interesting from every angle. A taller vase, a wider bowl, and a smaller candle or decorative accent often create a simple but balanced composition.

Round tables also benefit from a little restraint. Because the surface area is more compact, a few well-chosen pieces usually feel more elevated than overcrowding the table with too many accessories.

Oval Coffee Table Styling

Oval coffee tables combine some of the best qualities of both rectangular and round shapes. They have the length of a rectangle but the softer edges of a round table, which makes them especially versatile for layered styling.

One of the easiest ways to style an oval table is by following the natural curve of the shape. Trays work especially well here because they help anchor smaller items while maintaining a clean, elongated arrangement. Layering books, bowls, candles, and greenery within a tray can make the styling feel organized without looking overly formal.

Oval coffee tables also pair beautifully with softer materials and curved accessories that reinforce the flow of the shape. Keeping the arrangement slightly elongated rather than perfectly centered often helps the entire space feel more relaxed and natural.
