A Soft & Sophisticated Guest Bedroom Design for a New Serenity Grove Home
Moving into a brand-new home is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming when it comes to making each room feel personal and complete.
Recently, I created a concept design for a family moving into the beautiful Serenity Grove community in Chino Hills. While they were excited about furnishing their new home, one room held special significance: the guest bedroom.
The homeowner’s mother would be living with them, and they wanted to create a space that felt welcoming, comfortable, and thoughtfully designed just for her. Their vision was clear.
They wanted the room to feel feminine, soft, and a little whimsical, while still maintaining a sophisticated look that would feel timeless for years to come.

Starting with Character
One of the challenges with many new construction homes is that the rooms can sometimes feel a little plain or lacking in architectural detail.
To add character and create a more custom feel, I suggested incorporating decorative wall trim throughout the room. Rather than leaving the trim white, I recommended color drenching the space by painting the walls, trim, and door all in Sherwin-Williams Windy Blue.
Color drenching is one of my favorite ways to create a cozy, elevated atmosphere. By carrying the same color across multiple surfaces, the room instantly feels more intentional and enveloping. Windy Blue brings a softness to the space that feels calming and serene while still adding personality.
The result is a room that feels collected and thoughtfully designed rather than builder-basic.

The Piece That Inspired the Design
Every room needs a starting point.
In this case, the piece that set the direction for the entire design was the Hale Canvas 6-Drawer Dresser from Anthropologie.
With its beautiful hand-painted appearance and artistic detailing, the dresser immediately brought a whimsical quality to the room. It feels unique and feminine without being overly sweet or juvenile.
Once we selected the dresser, the rest of the room began to come together naturally. The soft blue walls, layered textures, warm wood tones, and elegant accents all worked together to support the personality of this statement piece.
Rather than competing for attention, each design element complements the dresser and helps create a cohesive story throughout the space.

Creating a Retreat for Family
When designing guest rooms, I always encourage homeowners to think beyond simply providing a place to sleep.
The most memorable guest spaces feel like a retreat.
For this room, the goal was to create a space where the homeowner’s mother would feel comfortable, cared for, and truly at home. Soft bedding, layered lighting, beautiful furnishings, and calming colors all contribute to an environment that feels relaxing and welcoming.
Small details can make a significant difference in how a space feels, especially when creating a room for someone you love.

From architectural details and paint selections to furniture sourcing and space planning, creating a cohesive home starts with having a clear plan.
