Like anything else in design, cabinet trends change every few years. If you are updating your kitchen and want to create a timeless look, here are some tips for how to choose timeless kitchen cabinets.
- Keep cabinet paneling simple…but not too simple
- Stay away from arch designs
- Choose a wood that has a minimal grain pattern
- Choose a timeless stain or paint color
- Keep the finish color solid throughout
Keep your cabinet paneling simple…but not too simple
Cabinets that have a completely flat front tend to be popular in trends. Some sort of simple raised or recessed panel on your cabinets will give it a more timeless look than no paneling at all. Avoid rope trim, dentals, egg & dart trim, and fancy appliques for a more timeless look. And unless you are specifically going for a cottage look, stay away from bead-board style decorative paneling.
Stay away from arch designs
Arches are having their moment in interior design right now but it’s a trend that will eventually fade out. Keep the inset cabinet design squared off for a timeless look.
Choose a wood that has a minimal grain pattern
A heavy grain pattern will show through stain and paint. Cabinets with a light and minimal grain pattern for a more timeless look. Choose a close-grained wood like maple that provides a more uniform grain pattern. This article about understanding grain pattern is helpful.
Choose a timeless stain or paint color
I’m all about a fun pop of color for your kitchen cabinets. Especially now, when dark blue and green kitchen cabinets are making their debut in the design world. However, the most timeless paint colors for cabinets will probably always be white, cream, or a light shade of gray. For the look of natural wood, stay with a medium tone. Wood that is very dark or bleached tends to go in trends and will probably look dated at some point.
Keep the finish color solid throughout
Keep the finish color solid throughout. Highlighting the panel grooves or edges with a darker finish has a dated feel. This is of course unless you are going for an aged Tuscan look on your cabinets.
