Designing an open concept home can feel overwhelming. With so many connected spaces—entryway, living room, dining room, and kitchen—it’s easy for each area to feel disjointed. That’s where virtual interior design becomes a game-changer. Our recent project showcases how a thoughtful design plan can bring style, function, and cohesion to a modern industrial farmhouse.
Starting Point: Accents of Millstone Gray
Our client had already established a beautiful foundation with accents of Benjamin Moore’s Millstone Gray. This versatile color has just the right balance of warmth and depth, making it an ideal anchor for an open concept design. The challenge was weaving this color into multiple spaces without overusing it, while also layering in industrial farmhouse textures and finishes.
Design Goals for the Open Concept Space
-
Create cohesion across the entryway, living room, dining room, and kitchen
-
Blend modern farmhouse charm with industrial details
-
Highlight architectural features without overwhelming the space
-
Ensure each zone feels defined yet connected
The Virtual Interior Design Process
With virtual design, clients get professional guidance without the limitations of in-person meetings. Through detailed plans, mood boards, and 3D renderings, we developed a step-by-step design plan that our client could implement at their own pace.
Some of the key recommendations included:
-
Entryway: A statement console table with enclosed storage for hiding shoes and other items.
-
Living Room: A bold new area rug to help ground the space and a cozy side chair to finish off the seating arrangement.
-
Dining Room: Two statement head chairs for the dining table and a gallery wall of photos on the main wall.
-
Kitchen: Bring Millstone Gray into the kitchen with an accent wall behind the coffee bar and by adding it to the base of the kitchen island. Change out counter stools and add a runner to tie everything together.

Achieving Cohesion Through Color & Texture
The secret to making an open concept home feel intentional is a consistent color palette. Millstone Gray became the thread that connected each space, paired with natural wood, black accents, and textured fabrics. Industrial details like iron lighting and leather seating added contrast, while farmhouse touches kept the design warm and welcoming.
