Virtual Interior Design Feature: A Fresh + Elevated Formal Living Room Makeover

modern classic living room design

For the past eight years, my client’s formal living room has doubled as a full-time playroom. Toys, crafts, and kid-life have made this space well-loved—but definitely not “formal living room” material. Now that her kids are older, she was ready to reclaim this room as a sophisticated, inviting space where she can host guests, unwind at the end of the day, and finally enjoy a grown-up living room.

This redesign was all about honoring the family’s history in the space while giving it a brand-new identity rooted in comfort, beauty, and functionality.

The Vision: A Calm, Collected & Elevated Living Room

My client wanted the room to feel:

  • Polished yet comfortable

  • Family-friendly without feeling kid-centric

  • Classic with a modern, cozy twist

We started with a gorgeous pair of York Square Arm Sofas from Pottery Barn—a timeless choice that instantly brings structure and elegance to any space. Using two matching sofas creates the perfect symmetrical layout, making the room feel intentional and beautifully balanced.

Why the York Square Arm Sofa Was the Perfect Fit

These sofas are known for:

  • Deep, sink-in comfort: Perfect for movie nights or hosting.

  • Classic tailoring: The square arms and clean lines help the room feel refined.

  • Customizable fabrics: We selected a durable, family-friendly fabric that stands up to real life—but looks elevated enough for a formal setting.

  • Style longevity: These sofas will look just as beautiful in ten years as they do today.

The pair anchors the entire room and instantly shifts the vibe away from “playroom” and into “sophisticated gathering space.”

Creating a Space That Finally Feels ‘Finished’

With the core seating in place, we layered in thoughtful pieces that bring warmth and character:

A grounding area rug

We chose a soft, neutral rug large enough to fully define the seating zone. The scale is key—it makes the room feel grown-up and intentional.

Classic, comfortable accent chairs

These offer additional seating for entertaining and help round out the layout without overwhelming it.

Warm wood tones + soft textures

A mix of wood, brass, linen, and boucle add dimension and keep the palette timeless.

Art + accessories that reflect her style today

For years, the walls showcased kids’ art and toy storage—now they feature beautiful framed pieces and curated decor that truly feel like her.

Bringing New Life to a Long-Used Space

One of my favorite parts of this project is seeing how emotional it can be for a client to reclaim a room they haven’t fully used in years. This living room now feels:

Intentional
Comfortable
Beautifully put-together
Like an adult space again—without losing its family-friendly roots

What once was a room full of toys is now a place where she can host friends, enjoy a glass of wine, or simply sit down and appreciate a space designed just for her.
