I just completed this home office design with a cozy sitting area for my virtual client in Hastings, Minnesota. She started with a small but light-filled room that is connected to her kitchen through an arched opening. She wanted to use the space as an office, keeping her current desk but replacing the small file cabinets on either side. She was also struggling with what to do with the space on the left side of the room, behind the desk.

I started by creating a furniture layout plan to determine what size furniture the room could accommodate and what pieces might work. I knew an area rug was needed to soften the space, and I thought two smallish club chairs might work perfectly.

Once I figured out the perfect size and position for the area rug and club chairs and considered the possibility of an upholstered ottoman, I pulled together a design board with exact furniture recommendations that would fit the plan.
I started with a pair of mocha brown swivel club chairs from Walmart. They are under $300 each, so they’re a great starting point budget-wise. There wasn’t any color in the room yet, so I introduced a denim blue area rug and desk chair, along with a new piece of art that also included shades of blue.

I used my AI design program to create this 3D image of how everything will look together once the room is complete. I’m excited to work with her virtually as she brings this space together over the next several weeks!
