The homeowners wanted their connected living and dining areas to feel lighter, more cohesive and better suited to everyday life. The refresh included fresh paint, new area rugs, updated window coverings from Two Pages Curtains and several new furniture pieces chosen to bring greater comfort, warmth and functionality to both spaces.
Creating a Better Living Room Layout
Before selecting the new furniture, I started by reconsidering the arrangement of the living room.
The original layout wasn’t making the most of the room’s fireplace and television wall. By creating a furniture arrangement centered around these two natural focal points, the living area immediately began to feel more intentional. The new arrangement also creates more opportunities for conversation.
It’s a good reminder that furnishing a room doesn’t always begin with choosing a sofa. Often, the most important first step is determining how the room should function and creating the right furniture layout around that.
Comfortable, Family-Friendly Seating
Comfort was an important consideration for the new living room furniture.
The Big Sur Power Recliner Loveseat from Pottery Barn provides the deep, comfortable seating the couple wanted while still feeling elevated enough for the newly refreshed space. The reclining feature makes it especially practical for everyday use without requiring the room to sacrifice style.
Two swivel accent chairs from Living Spaces complete the seating arrangement. Swivel chairs are particularly helpful in a room with more than one focal point because they can turn toward the fireplace, television or conversation area as needed.
Together, the loveseat and swivel chairs create a flexible arrangement that feels inviting and encourages people to gather.
Bringing the Living and Dining Areas Together
Because the living room and dining room are visually connected, it was important for the two spaces to feel cohesive without making them look overly matched.
Fresh paint gave the rooms a cleaner, lighter foundation, while new area rugs helped define each individual space. The rugs add softness and visual interest while allowing the living and dining areas to maintain their own identities.
In the dining room, new upholstered dining chairs from Williams Sonoma introduced additional comfort and texture. The upholstery softens the room and gives the dining area a more polished, welcoming feel—perfect for both everyday meals and special gatherings.
New window coverings from Two Pages Curtains also helped bring the rooms together. Window treatments can have a major impact on a home, especially in connected spaces where multiple windows are visible at once. The updated coverings add warmth and softness while creating a more finished appearance throughout both rooms.
The finished living and dining areas feel fresh, comfortable and connected.
This project didn’t require replacing everything. Instead, it began with identifying what wasn’t working, creating a better plan for the rooms and choosing new pieces that would make the biggest difference.
That thoughtful approach allowed the homeowners to keep what still worked while creating living and dining spaces that feel renewed, cohesive and better suited to the way they live.
