Chino Hills Interior Design: A Warm, Layered Dining Room for a New Build Home

Chino Hills New Build Interior Design Feature

Moving Into a New Build… But Where Do You Start?

One of the biggest challenges I see with new build homes—especially here in Chino Hills—is that everything feels very new.

The walls are blank.
The lighting is basic.
And even if you’ve already started buying furniture, it can feel like nothing is really coming together yet.

That’s exactly the situation this family found themselves in.

They had just moved into their new home and wanted to get their dining space pulled together right away—before making any expensive mistakes.

Because the truth is…the dining room is one of the easiest places to get wrong.

Too small of a rug.
Chairs that don’t quite fit.
Lighting that feels off.

And suddenly the whole room feels “almost right”… but not finished.

Starting With a Clear Plan (Before Buying Anything)

Instead of guessing, we started the way I always do—with a clear, cohesive plan.

The goal for this space:

  • Warm and inviting
  • Neutral but layered
  • Elevated without feeling formal

We built everything around a soft, livable foundation using Sherwin Williams Alabaster (SW 7008) on the walls and baseboards.

The Key to Making This Dining Room Work

This design wasn’t about one standout piece—it was about how everything works together.

Here’s what really brings the space to life:

✔️ A properly scaled dining table + seating layout

We used a table that comfortably seats 6:

  • 2 head chairs
  • 4 side chairs

This keeps the room balanced and functional without overcrowding the space.

✔️ A large area rug to anchor everything

The rug is doing more work than most people realize.

It:

  • defines the dining zone
  • adds softness
  • and makes the furniture feel connected instead of floating

✔️ Layered lighting

Instead of relying on overhead lighting alone, we added:

  • a statement chandelier
  • a picture light above the artwork
  • a table lamp on the sideboard

This creates that warm, layered glow that makes the room feel finished.

Window Treatments That Completely Change the Space

One of the biggest transformations in this room came from the window treatments.

We layered:

  • Woven wood blinds for texture
  • Custom curtains for softness and height

Both are from Two Pages Curtains, which I use often for client projects.

If you’re working on your own space, you can use code MENDEZMANOR for 22% off your order

This combination:

  • adds warmth to the room
  • makes ceilings feel taller
  • and brings in that “designed” look most people are missing

Why This Room Feels Finished (Even Though It’s Neutral)

A lot of people think neutral = boring.

But the difference here is layering:

  • wood tones
  • soft upholstery
  • subtle pattern in the rug
  • natural elements like greenery

Nothing is overpowering, but everything works together.
