Splurge vs. Save: How to Choose the Right Furniture for Your Home (Without Regret)

splurge versus save furniture

One of the biggest things I help my clients with isn’t just what looks good—it’s knowing where to spend and where to save.

Because the truth is… you don’t need to splurge on everything to have a beautiful, cohesive home. But you also don’t want to cut corners in the wrong places and end up replacing pieces a year later.

When I design a room, I’m always balancing:

  • quality
  • function
  • budget
  • and how each piece works with everything else in the space

These boards are a perfect example of that balance—showing splurge, save, and save-more options across a few key furniture categories.

Reeded Sideboards: Where Detail Really Matters

Reeded wood furniture has been everywhere lately—and for good reason. It adds warmth, texture, and that subtle “custom” feel to a space.

On the splurge end, pieces like the Stark Sideboard stand out for a reason. The construction, the soft-close doors, the hardware, and even the delivery experience all feel elevated.

👉 If you’re considering this one, I shared a full breakdown in my review here:

That said, I love a good save option here too. There are some really solid sideboards under $1,000 that still give you the look—especially if you’re styling a secondary space or working within a tighter budget.

The biggest difference usually comes down to:

  • durability
  • finish quality
  • and long-term wear

If this is a high-use piece in your main living area, it might be worth the splurge. Otherwise, a save option can absolutely work.

Curio Cabinets: Splurge for Statement, Save for Function

This is one of those categories where it really depends on the role the piece is playing in your home.

If your cabinet is acting as a statement piece—something that anchors a wall or showcases special items—the splurge option can make a huge difference. The finish, scale, and proportions tend to feel more substantial.

But if you’re simply looking for:

  • extra storage
  • a place to display decor
  • or something for a quieter corner

There are some great save options that still look beautiful once styled.

This is where I always tell clients:
👉 the styling can elevate the piece just as much as the piece itself.

Canopy Beds: Where Structure = Investment

Canopy beds are all about their frame—so this is one category where quality really shows.

With splurge options, you’ll usually notice:

  • sturdier construction
  • cleaner lines and proportions
  • higher quality upholstery or finishes

That said, there are some great mid-range and even budget-friendly options that still achieve the look—especially if the bed isn’t the only focal point in the room.

If you’re designing a primary bedroom and want that elevated, finished feel, I often guide clients toward investing a bit more here.

Bar Carts: A Fun Place to Save

Bar carts are one of my favorite places to pull back on budget a bit.

Yes, the splurge versions are beautiful—but this is typically a low-impact, styling-driven piece. It’s not something that takes daily wear like a sofa or dining table.

That means you can:

  • go with a more affordable option
  • still get the same visual impact
  • and swap it out later if your style changes

If you love that polished brass look, there are some great options under $500 (and even under $300 if you’re okay with assembly).
